BACKGROUND
The project comprises of the construction of a two storey extension building to the main hall at Norwood Primary School in Southport. The new area provides additional teaching space to over 200 students along with additional parking, cycle storage and landscaped play areas.
Constructed on a grassed area to the rear of the school the building, was of steel frame construction with block and beam floors, masonry façade and timber roof trusses with a tiled roof. The design also called for the installation of 3nr roof lights offering natural light to the upper floor.
Upon commencing ground work activities we discovered a hidden train station in the ground which we had to remove to allow the piling to continue. Even though this caused delays in the project, we were able to deliver the project on time, within the 52 week programme.
We worked closely with the design team and specialist sub-contractors during the pre-construction period to deliver a robust cost plan, commenting on the completeness of design and proposing ideas and solutions based on our knowledge and experience gained through other projects of this nature. Through this process we were able to design out future variations and propose value engineering savings and solutions. This process created a whole team approach and ownership of the drawings, specification and cost plan.
